How to Target Online Shoppers to Your Store

arrow Finding window shoppers for your online store is fairly easy but how do you get targeted shoppers to your web site that are looking to buy your product? And how do you keep them coming back? Well, marketing of course. That was easy. Yes, but marketing online is somewhat different than a brick and mortar store and it is becoming increasingly more important to be a successful online business. There was more than $500 million dollars worth of clothing purchased online this July according to ComScore Networks. This is a jump of 44% over last year. So lets look at some ideas to slice out a piece of that pie for your store. Here are some ideas that may build on what you already have.

Content is going to be a driving force to rate high in search engines for any web site. If you're selling clothes then make sure you have some text content about clothes on your web site. By using the names of your products and great descriptions you will bring in shoppers looking specifically for that product in a search engine like Google. Images are very important to the human visitor but make sure your images also have text descriptions and alternate image text for your search engine robot visitors.

Variety is another item online shoppers are really looking for, that one stop shop. So if you sell skirts and blouses think about partnering or expanding to sell some handbags to go with those skirts and blouses. This will add depth to your product line, give your shoppers more choices and add more searchable content to your site.

Organize all your products into clear and well laid out categories or "Channels" on your web site in the form of your main navigation. Online shoppers are impatient and know what they are looking for. If you don't make your products easy to find and easy to understand shoppers will not shop in your store. You don't have to list every color of shoelace you sell in your main navigation but be sure to make your categories clear and logical. Then you can make bullet lists of links on the shoelace page that explain all the different colors you offer.

Making the most of opportunity marketing and content is a big draw for a shopper looking for winter ski pants or summer shorts. Traffic at online toy retailing sites and apparel sites draw over 60% of female online shoppers during November. Knowing whom your online customer is and what they are looking for means that you can plan your marketing strategy around them.

Get to know your customers that are making purchases by having them fill out some very general user information during their purchase. Use this as a demographic of your shoppers and use it to target their needs. Then take it a step farther and keep in touch with them each month by emailing them a small promotional newsletter with product updates, coupons, contest entries and whatever else will entice them back into your online store. When you do these two items always make sure to have one page on your site dedicated to your privacy policy. This way your customer can feel safe that you will use the information provided only for the purpose it's intended for.

To please today's typical online shopper, the consensus among analysts is that online stores should provide complete order status access, a clear and easy to follow shopping cart experience, fulfillment consistency, multiple well organized channels, wide product selection and intuitive web design. A tall order for some, but a must if your shop is going to succeed in the growing online shopping business.
